The new compound developed for ADVAN Sport was tested many times under hypervelocity conditions, and is the ultimate model by Yokohama. This high-grip rubber ensures both pliability and strength.

The state-of-the-art technology that was used to cause the chemical reaction between polymer and silica is what derived such a high performance.

A compound is usually made by compounding polymer and silica. However, Yokohama Rubber succeeded in creating a compound of higher performance by bringing about a "chemical reaction" when compounding polymer and silica.




High heat resistance and a strong grip. A type of rubber with less temperature dependency was newly developed.

Tread temperature heightens during high-load, high-velocity cruising. If the temperature level reaches an extreme limit, the tire may destabilize due to the heat, causing deterioration in the tire's grip. Thus, Yokohama Rubber, with its original technology, developed a compound that makes "the grip less susceptible to heat."










Asymmetry pattern

A highly rigid rib design is adopted for the outer side, while ribs and blocks are aligned to optimally focus on handling, braking distance and noise reduction.



Variable round grooves

These are original grooves that were cut in a round shape with different widths and angles. They prevent one-sided abrasion and ensure high performance on wet surfaces.



Grooves within grooves

"Grooves within grooves" are finely cut in the wall of the four main grooves. They improve handling performance and abrasion resistance.



Optimal design of groove ends

By controlling groove ends, handling performance, abrasion resistance and noise reduction are all kept in good balance.



Dimples and sipes

Optimal alignment of dimples and sipes ensures a stronger heat liberation effect and higher performance on wet surfaces.

What it's supposed to do:
Improve handling by reducing upsprung weight and allowing the fitment of wider tyres. It's safe to say that the majority of alloy rims are brought for their style rather than their function. Still, there are many benefits in putting on a set of lightweight wheels/rims to replace the steel or alloy ones that came with the car. Forged rims are extremely light and they allow the car suspension to do its work more effectively, thus improving both steering response n ride comfort. With Technological advances, low profile tyres are becoming less unforgiving in their ride characteristics and they are alos quite cheap these days, so a plus-one upgrade from standard set-up gives noticeable handling improvements with hardly any impact on the comfort.

I replaced it with Falken ze326.

How tyre treads help improve your driving experience

Many people choose their tyres by looking at the tread pattern. Some may pick a tyre by how "cool" the pattern looks, and they may end up with tyres that emit a lot of noise while driving. Or they may discover that the tyres do not offer good grip and road handling, thereby compromising on personal safety.


What exactly can you tell about a tyre from those grooves, valleys and patterns? And is there a tyre tread that works best for you?

Here are some quick tips to help you make sense of tread patterns:

The Rubber Blocks: otherwise called tread blocks, they are the ones that come into contact with the ground and thus determine how well the tyre grips the road. The more tread blocks there are, the better the grip.
The Valleys & Grooves: when it rains, these little grooves are hard at work! Water on the tyre is channeled into them where they are stored. As the tyre roll, the water is then released from the back. If there are not enough grooves, water cannot be dispersed from the surface of the tyre which can cause the tyre to loose contact with the road, commonly called Aquaplaning.


So in short, the blocks provide better grip in dry conditions while the grooves and valleys helps disperse water allowing for better control and handling in wet conditions. To ensure that the tyre offers a safe ride, there needs to be a balance between the blocks and the grooves and this relates to today's topic - tread patterns. These come in 3 generic patterns; symmetrical, directional and the latest - asymmetrical.

Symmetrical tyre treads looks the same from all angles and can be fitted onto either side of the car
Directional tread patterns point in a certain direction and have to be fitted in a specific direction
Asymmetrical tyre treads have distinct patterns on the outside zone of the tyre that is unique and different from the pattern on the inner zone.


Asymmetrical tyres provide a good compromise to the grip and wet paradox:
Outer zone: bigger & firmer blocks for the outer shoulders to ensure cornering stability
Center & Inner zone: more grooves for better water drainage to ensure better performance in wet conditions
